Hazard Mitigation

Hazard mitigation planning is a proactive process focused on reducing or eliminating long-term risks to people, property, and infrastructure from natural and manmade hazards. Through planning and sustained effort, Champaign County EMA works to lessen the impact of disasters before they occur. 

What is Hazard Mitigation?

Hazard mitigation involves actions taken to prevent future damage and reduce vulnerability. This includes identifying risks and implementing strategies to minimize their impact on the community.

Our Approach

Champaign County EMA leads the development and maintenance of the county’s Hazard Mitigation Plan in coordination with local jurisdictions, partners, and stakeholders. This plan: 

  • Identifies and assesses local hazards and vulnerabilities  

  • Prioritizes projects and strategies to reduce risk  

  • Aligns with state and federal requirements  

  • Supports long-term community resilience and sustainability
